Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:

Marine electrician apprentice who is training to work with AC and
DC electrical distribution systems, motors and controls, and a wide
variety of electrical installations, from very old to very new.
He/She normally works from 7:00am to 3:30pm weekdays with - hour
break for lunch. Occasionally the Yard Electrical Technician
Apprentice will be expected to work long shifts of up to 12 hours
and some weekends. Some out of area travel may be necessary.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
Electrical safety requirements.
Some exposure to the National Electric Code and/or IEEE-45 and/or
ABS Steel Vessel Rules Part 4 and/or Standard Shipboard Wiring and
Electrical Safety practices.
Read and interpret blueprints and drawings under supervision
Cable, conduit, and junction box sizing and routing/mounting
requirements.
Electrical theory, both AC and DC.
AC and DC Motor and controller operation and troubleshooting.
Circuit breaker operation and control circuits.
PLC operation and troubleshooting techniques are a plus.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS: (Minimal experience expected, to be learned
under supervision)
Use of electrical test equipment including:Multimeter
Insulation Resistance Tester (Megger)
Clamp-on Ammeter
Circuit Tracer
Oscilloscope (desired, not required)
Process Loop Calibrator/Tester (desired, not required)
Effectively determine potential hazards associated with electrical
construction, maintenance, and repair activities
Proper application of lockout/tagout system
Use of PPE IncludingSteel toed boots, eye protection, and life
vest
Arc Flash clothing
Filter Mask
Electrical Safety Gloves
Install electrical cableways, and secure cables
Layout mounts for and mount electrical panels and enclosures
Layout mounts for and mount various types of interior and exterior
lighting fixtures
Correctly terminate electrical distribution panels
Terminate wiring for AC and DC Motors
Wire control and indication panels given appropriate drawings.
Troubleshoot and repair AC and DC controllers
Troubleshoot and identify problems with DC Motors
Troubleshoot and identify problems with sensors and Programmable
Logic Control I/O systems
Install controllers and electrical control equipment
Test electrical distribution equipment and controllers for proper
operation
Perform installations and maintenance in accordance with National
Electric Code (NFPA 70)
Observe general electrical safety principles (NFPA 70E)
Effectively use the English language to communicate both verbally
and via writing.
Effectively use a computer for basic information gathering,
including web browser, MS-Word, and MS-Excel.
Lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds
Administer Basic First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
TASKS PERFORMED: (under supervision)
Reads, correctly interprets and evaluates electrical drawings for
the purpose of:Correctly applying Lockout/Tagout
Performing Routine or Corrective Maintenance
Performing New construction
Performing troubleshooting and repairs
Assesses trouble reports and performs troubleshooting, parts
ordering, electrical repairs, and post -repair testing as required
on the following:AC and DC motors and controllers
Lighting Systems
Electrical Distribution Systems
Crane Controls
Video and low voltage alarm systems
Coordinates maintenance activities with other trades to accomplish
prioritized objectives.
Fabricates wire-ways, panel wiring entrances and terminations.
Coordinates maintenance activities with mechanics and other
electricians to insure continuity in the completion of maintenance
projects.
Maintains housekeeping standards by keeping a clean and safe work
area at all times.
Prepares parts requisitions.
Follows the Company Safe Work Practices at all times.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position is at times a physically strenuous and demanding job.
The candidate must be able to lift, pull and manage equipment and
tools and be able to work in all weather (both extreme heat and
cold). The candidate must have good mechanical ability and manual
dexterity.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The candidate must work outside in all different weather
conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat. Exposure to
dangerous and/or toxic substances is possible at times so candidate
must be able to wear appropriate personnel protective equipment to
protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation or infection.
SENSORY DEMANDS:
The candidate must have good hearing and visual acuity including
unimpaired color perception to check operations and product
specifications and to work safely around electrical equipment.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
The candidate must be able to speak and write English in order to
carry out instructions and to communicate with others. He/She must
have the ability to use complex drawings, basic mathematics,
handbook formulas and a variety of measuring instruments. Must be
able to filter and evaluate information from a variety of sources
and use the information to come to logical, reason-based
conclusions and solutions. Candidate is expected to work with
limited supervision.
TIME DEMANDS:
The candidate must be reachable by phone after hours. He/She must
be available to occasionally work long shifts of up to 12 hours/day
for up to several weeks at a time. He/She must be available to
occasionally work on a Saturday or Sunday or both. He/She must be
able to travel out of area for up to several weeks if required
